The Science

What the research actually says.

Poised keeps its functional claims to authorised GB vitamin and mineral rules. Alongside them, here is the published, peer-reviewed research on the ingredients we use — with full citations. These describe findings on the ingredients; they are not medical claims about Poised.

How we talk about function. Poised’s functional messaging rests only on authorised GB claims for magnesium, zinc and the B-vitamins — the nutrients behind “focus”. Botanicals are included for flavour and tradition and carry no health claim of any kind.

Clear Focus — the functional core

Authorised GB claims, used subject to meeting the required amount per serving:

Magnesium → normal psychological function Magnesium & B-vitamins → reduction of tiredness & fatigue Zinc → normal cognitive function B6 & B12 → nervous system function

Green tea — theanine & caffeine

Tea naturally contains both caffeine and the amino acid theanine. In Clear Focus the theanine is intrinsic to the green tea extract, not an added isolate. Their pairing is among the most-researched in nutrition science, studied for attention and alertness.

Randomised · Crossover

Tea's theanine with caffeine improved accuracy and speed on attention tasks, beyond caffeine alone.

100mg L-theanine — the amino acid found in tea — with 50mg caffeine improved attention-switching and reduced distraction.

Randomised · Double-blind · Placebo-controlled

The combination improved alertness and reaction time — with fewer headaches than caffeine alone.

250mg L-theanine with 150mg caffeine improved speed, accuracy and self-reported alertness.

Haskell CF et al. (2008). Biological Psychology, 77(2), 113–122. PubMed →
EEG · Brain activity

Theanine increases alpha brain-wave activity — associated with alert, focused attention.

At dietary doses, tea's theanine raised alpha-band activity in resting EEG.

Nobre AC et al. (2008). Asia Pac J Clin Nutr, 17(S1), 167–168. PubMed →
EEG · Attention task

Together, theanine and caffeine shaped alpha activity tracking improved attention.

Theanine and caffeine together affected alpha-band activity alongside better visuospatial attention.

The botanicals

Randomised · Double-blind · Placebo-controlled

Panax ginseng improved aspects of working memory and mental performance.

Ginseng (G115) over eight days improved working-memory task performance in healthy young adults.

Reay JL, Scholey AB, Kennedy DO. (2010). Human Psychopharmacology, 25(6), 462–471. PubMed →
Randomised · Double-blind · Placebo-controlled

Lemon balm improved accuracy of attention in healthy adults.

A standardised Melissa officinalis extract produced a sustained improvement in accuracy of attention.

Kennedy DO et al. (2002). Pharmacol Biochem Behav, 72(4), 953–964. PubMed →

German chamomile and linden flower are included as sensory botanicals only; Poised makes no health claim for them.

CocoOn — hydration & nutrients

Randomised · Single-blind · Crossover

Coconut water rehydrated as effectively as a carbohydrate-electrolyte sports drink after exercise.

After dehydrating exercise, coconut water restored fluid balance comparably to a sports drink, with no difference in markers of hydration.

Authorised claims

Added B-vitamins and minerals carry the functional claims.

Subject to meeting the required amount per serving: B-vitamins contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue; minerals support normal function per the GB register.

GB Nutrition & Health Claims Register.

CocoOn is not-from-concentrate and contains no added sugar. Coconut water naturally provides electrolytes including potassium.

An honest note. Poised drinks are foods, not medicines. Vitamin and mineral statements are authorised nutrition claims; the summaries above describe published research on individual ingredients and are not claims that any product treats, prevents or cures a condition. Clear Focus is high in caffeine and carries the mandatory advisory. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or managing a health condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.
